About Tatranský národný park (Tatra National Park)

Tatranský národný park, established in 1949, is Slovakia's oldest national park and covers the northern part of the High Tatras mountain range along the border with Poland. The park spans approximately 738 square kilometers and features rugged peaks, deep valleys, glacial lakes, and dense coniferous forests. The Tatras are the highest mountains in the Carpathian range with the highest peak, Gerlachovský štít, reaching 2,655 meters (8,711 feet). The park is home to diverse flora and fauna, including rare species such as the Tatra chamois (Rupicapra rupicapra tatrica), brown bears, lynxes, and eagles.

Outdoor enthusiasts are attracted to the park for its extensive network of marked hiking trails leading to panoramic viewpoints, alpine meadows, and pristine mountain lakes like Štrbské pleso and Popradské pleso. In winter, the area transforms into a hub for snow sports including skiing and snowshoeing. Climbing is popular on steep granite walls and rocky ridges. The park’s protected status ensures conservation of fragile ecosystems and cultural heritage, including traditional mountain villages and historic mountain huts. Visitors can also explore educational nature trails and visit visitor centers that provide insight into the Tatras' natural history.

Tatranský národný park offers immersive nature experiences year-round, whether through strenuous mountain climbs, peaceful lakeside strolls, or wildlife watching expeditions. The combination of spectacular scenery, well-maintained trails, and conservation efforts makes it a prime destination within Central Europe for outdoor recreation and nature appreciation.
